Milpitas: Planning Commission to review 400-unit residential complex, consider gym expansion March 9

Milpitas Planning Commission will hold public hearings Wednesday on a proposed housing project and a requested expansion of a local gym.

The panel will review a developer's application for a conditional use permit to build a 302-unit apartment tower and 98 townhomes on a 5.75-acre site at 1256 Piper Drive. The project is within the city's Transit Area Specific Plan and close to the future Milpitas Bay Area Rapid Transit Station off Montague Expressway.

The commission also is scheduled to review a request by Milpitas Star Aquatics & Fitness, 1818 Clear Lake Ave., for site development and minor conditional use permits to build a 13,129-square-foot, second-story addition to the athletic club. The project also entails remodeling approximately 8,000 square feet of the first floor to accommodate a new after-school facility, which would be a separate tenant, a city staff report says.

According to the gym's website, Milpitas Star Aquatics boasts two indoor pools and a fitness center that offers swimming lessons, competitive swimming, lap swimming, summer camps, steam and sauna, cardio machines, weight training machines, free weights, and aerobics and yoga classes, among other activities.

The planning commission meeting will begin 7 p.m. March 9 inside city hall's council chambers, 455 E. Calaveras Blvd.
